So Han is done with the Liberty, Johannes can't come over next season, Dolson isn't worth the vet minimum and Willoughby isn't worth anything. That's four bench spots available. Two go to our draft picks, and then we should be able to add two cheap contracts somehow. Wouldn't mind a trade for Stephanie Soares from Washington. Would Sandy make a trade for Shaneice Swain from Los Angeles? I'd add I'd like to see Engstler in our camp next season. Also, Destanni Henderson, Amy Atwell, Jasmine Dickey, Arella Guirantes, Lauren Cox all come to mind for training camp players. Maybe Fiebich comes over? Carrera?
Cox will probably not be an option due to prioritization. Johannes's agent should absolutely exhaust every option with the league to determine whether she really is subject to prioritization or not. By the absolute letter of the CBA, she is not because she showed up late two out of three times. In all likelihood, their interpretation of the rules will leave her with all three years of service though.
She's an attractive blonde who plays with bounce and elite athleticism.
She plays the game with the IQ of a two-year-old.
When the athleticism prevails, she makes plays no one else can. When the IQ takes over, she attempts plays that no one should.
Putting her in a game is like rolling a pair of dice onto the court. There's absolutely no way to tell what might happen. Some of it is good, incredibly good. Some of it is so bad you wonder if you're watching a high school JV game.
I've coached for a long time so I absolutely hate players like that. I like to have a sense of what I'm going to get when I put a player into a game -- and though "chaos" is an answer, it's not one I like all that much.
Her PER last year was 10.5 (average is 15), and PER is heavily weighted to offense. No one has ever accused Johannes of being a plus defender, even though her athleticism can produce on that end of the court now and again.
In short, her absence is more a positive for the Liberty than a negative, though her replacement won't, for a variety of reasons, be nearly as watchable.
Yeah, Johannes took a step back this season. She needs a solid shooting coach and also someone to teach her defense. She was probably one of the worst defensive players in 2023. It's no loss that she can't come over next year.
it remains unfortunate for the team that Slooty is signed through 2024. a smart move by her & her agent though that didn’t necessarily look that forward-thinking to me at the time.

She still led the league in assists per game(8.1). But she's slow now and her offensive game disappeared last season. Liberty need a young PG and a young defensive guard/wing for the draft. Reduce Sloot's MPG to 25 pg maximum.
i think she was the biggest reason why New York didn’t win the title, to be blunt. and if she were even a little bit of a plus throughout that series rather than the minus she turned out to be, i think New York would’ve indeed gone on to win it all – assuming CGray would’ve still gotten injured of course.
for that reason alone, i think the team should very much be looking to see what they could get for her in these next several weeks. as competitive as someone like Stewart is, i think even she would understand.

It's believed Sloot & Stewart decided to come to New York together. They were either going to New York as a pair or to Seattle. As much as Stewie wants a title in New York, I don't think she does it in 2024 without Sloot there. But Stewart's bball IQ is high and has probably watched enough film of the finals to know what went wrong.

and i don’t think Stewie does it in 2024 with Sloot there. b-ball IQ doesn’t mean much for anyone on the team if Father Time has caught up to Sloot & she can’t hit the makeable shots she takes. and she’ll always be a bit of a wild card as a passer in high-stakes situations, as prolific as she’s been at that.
with 2024 being an Olympic year, who knows how much energy Stewart herself will have left to give in next year’s playoffs. that could affect several good teams' chances with Olympians on their rosters.

Even though her defense isn’t the best, I still want Te-Hina PaoPao on our team next year. I think she pairs well with Sab as a combo guard who can also shoot the ball extremely well, and has passing/playmaking chops too. Not the best defensive duo, but neither is Sab plus Sloot.
With Laney, Stewie and JJ (hopefully) the front court is good defensively. And hopefully we are elite enough offensively with the addition of a scorer like PaoPao.
PaoPao isn’t the answer to a championship, I think that requires Stewie to be competent offensively, not even stellar, just competent. Along with Jonquel stepping up like she was.
Be kind to yourself, the way you expect others to be kind to you.
Jonquel is there top priority this offseason. Stewart is cored. Han and Johannes aren't coming over. Willoughby should be done and Dolson can go elsewhere.

All very true, how much FA $ might they have to spend?

Probably a near max deal, all depends how much Stewart wants. Replace Dolson with a young post player that can run the floor. Our #11 and #17 picks should be a PG & SG.
for the record, i still wish the team had taken Burton instead of NSabally in the 2022 Draft. not too late to trade for her, however. take advantage of Dallas still not having defined roles for their players!
