a reminder that Liberty fans would want the Merc to be bad again in 2024, as the Liberty own the right to swap 1RPs in 2025 thanks to the 4-team trade that included Onyenwere.
thus, one shouldn’t want the Merc to get a game-changer in the 2024 Draft. the Merc should be bad regardless, but you never know.
with how steadfastly free agents change teams nowadays, i don’t feel comfortable penciling Griner in as returning, not when the team has as little direction on the court as ever.
maybe her gratitude for how the franchise honored & advocated for her while she was detained in Russia will be the prevailing factor… or maybe it’ll be her desire to be on a competitive team let alone one that can contend.
I have no insight at all, but after the trauma Griner went through, my sense is that feeling comfortable in her surroundings would be a very high priority for her -- higher than ring-chasing or pretty much anything else.
She will get paid in Phoenix, and if she feels safe and secure there, why should she add uncertainty to her life?
and she wasn’t even healthy enough to play last night apparently. bizarre on all fronts, unless this is alllllll about next year. even then, it’s all very odd.

like richyyy said, they don’t get her rights so she’s not obligated to sign only with them
and isn’t she now wasting her “rookie” season by being on the roster now…. A waste for her imo except getting a year of service I guess potentially

Mo-Jeff said something in their press conference after last night's game about getting her in Phoenix because she's from UCONN. Maybe just a charity case to give her a week's paycheck?
i don’t understand. wasn’t she signed as a hardship player? unless Richyyy is saying hardship players can also function as maternity replacement-designated players.

The maternity tag can be moved from player to player apparently.

that part we knew. it surprises me that this apparently includes hardship players.
There's only one day left in the season and I don't care which scrub is designated as maternity girl. Christyn Williams getting paid to sit on the Merc bench is kind of ridiculous, but plenty of NBA players have been paid a whole lot more to be packing peanuts for trade salary matching so I can't get that worked up about it.
i’m happy for Williams herself, since obviously that knee injury set her back quite a bit. it is a bit odd from the Merc’s standpoint no matter the reasoning, but honestly we won’t be thinking about it too much once the playoffs start.
if that’s how the Merc want to spend their money, ok. meanwhile the Storm had several grand in cap space in the end there that went absolutely nowhere. (hope it’s not a sign that we’re trying to save money cuz we’re poor, but i don’t think that’s how that works anyway.)
