the direction of the team will greatly depend on who our lottery pick turns into – imo more so than whether or not Loyd re-signs. but that’s essentially 1A and 1B respectively.
i have low expectations in both circumstances as things stand now.
both the team and the player have to agree to a buyout/contract divorce. unless it were to become clear that Kia Nurse would have a landing spot, she & her agent have no incentive to agree to a buyout.
i mean, does this look like a player who has both current and future value? or even just one of the two?
If you have to pay her, why not keep her on the roster?
Now if she's a negative personality-wise, then cutting her makes sense. But if she works reasonably hard and doesn't rock the boat, she's better than most ninth or tenth players.

you cut her cuz there’ll be loads of cap space to work with anyway, so why not give the spot to someone who can meaningfully contribute? but she’s probably a good locker room presence, so that should be enough for her to continue to stick around.
otherwise, calling her better than most ninth or tenth players on a roster is suspect. her career numbers & limitations due to her past knee injury speak for themselves.

i am shocked she didn’t see what other teams had planned for her in negotiations, particularly Chicago. let’s be honest: she had better options if she wanted to go somewhere else to win. that said, the best teams won’t have the cap space for her, and the other decent teams just may not have had the pull. and she must be happy here, so in that way, i can understand it. and money was certainly a factor…
an extension still wasn’t even close to being on my radar.

while this certainly changes how we approach free agency next winter a bit, we were gonna need another scorer whether Loyd came back or not. (at least we don’t need one to replace Loyd now though!) it’d be nice if Horston both improves and fully recovers from the hurt shoulder she’s been dealing with all season, but even then. we need another – hopefully in the form of our lottery pick.
and i still want us to be another lottery team in 2024, cuz a theoretical Top-2 pick in 2025 will be maybe more impactful than who we get in 2024. my stance on that hasn’t changed – especially since Loyd is now scheduled to be here in 2025 to reap the rewards of that.
