The Las Vegas Aces champion told Yahoo Sports “it’s not official,” but she submitted a statement this week to run for vice president of the WNBA Players Association (WNBPA).
“I’m not much of a politician, but I am a firecracker,” Plum told Yahoo Sports, through her partnership with American Express and its NBA 2K23 Lab. “And so I feel like I can come in there and start some fires. I think that a lot of times people try to play nice and please people, and I’m not here to do that. I feel like my job, if elected, would be to represent the players at a true level and not just the top echelon of players, but the full range of players. I think that if given the opportunity, I’m really excited to go to work and go to bat.” …
If she were elected, she said she’d want a “pulse” of the league by sending out polls, surveys and chatting with players. Everyone might have different priorities, from prioritization, opportunities to go overseas, higher salaries or travel to “different opportunities that the league isn’t providing that it could provide.”
The joys of vague subtweeting, where she could be literally targeting anybody lol.
It has been suggested elsewhere that this is in response to Vegas potentially putting her on the trading block. Maybe? I don't know why anybody else would want to trade for Hamby at this moment though. Might wait until there is a little more information because continuing with the speculation lol.
Yep, who really knows… hey, maybe Vegas finds a way to swap their pregnant player for Phoenix’s, I hear the Merc’s one actually wants to go elsewhere 👀😉
I wish the WNBA would allow teams to not count pregnant players' salaries toward the cap.
I agree that players on maternity leave should not have their salaries count against the cap. It's something the players should insist upon in the next CBA (because you know it was probably the owners who insisted on this).
So why would Vegas want to get rid of Hamby? I propose several reasons:
1) They had a very successful playoffs campaign without her playing much of a role. They had shown they didn't need her as such to win a championship which made her expendable.
2) I think Hammon wants to have decent outside shooting at all positions - this would explain her preference for Riquna Williams over Kiah Stokes at key moments in the 2022 WNBA Finals. This is one thing Hamby lacked and she's unlikely to develop this in the near future. They now have cap space to pursue a stretch post through free agency or a trade. They also traded for the rights for Amanda Zahui B who could potentially fill this role (though I think her outside shot and game generally is a bit iffy, but she's a better shooter than Hamby for sure).
EDIT: yeah I failed to take into account the potential taking a year off for new child thing. This would have likely influenced their decision making and Hamby certainly interpreted being put on the trade block due to this.

Sad to see Hamby go but happy for Zahui B! I always thought she would be a good fit for Vegas, she gets boards and blocks and can stretch the floor. A little lacking in the basketball IQ but a fun teammate when she was with the Libs.
Be kind to yourself, the way you expect others to be kind to you.

lol I don’t think you meant to shade her by any means but I still found this funny 😂🤪😆
