One thing that has slipped under the radar a little bit is that there's been a power struggle for control over the WNBL between Basketball Australia and the 8 club owners. I don't know what the final result is but free agency is finally going ahead so I assume *some* (possibly temporary) deal has been reached. Here's an article with more detail on what's been happening:
Tiana Mangakahia retires from professional basketball due to her breast cancer returning. Sad to hear - she's very talented and fun to watch on court. Hope to see her on the sidelines after cancer treatment.
oh my god. stage IV that has spread to other parts of her body? her entire life hangs in the balance. poor Tiana. she'll certainly be in my thoughts for a while.

The Sydney Flames have signed both Cayla George and Shaneice Swain to multi year contracts. After the Shane Heal debacle last season, they’re spending big and putting together a good team.
I had an interesting conversation with a college assistant who played in Australia. She was at our open gym.
She said the league "took care of their own," and the focus was on making sure the Australian players were paid well and promoted. Nothing wrong with that, of course, but though she didn't come right out and say it, it was clear she didn't think it was fair to the imports.
And the money, as we know, didn't compare to Europe, but she liked the league and the fact that the weather was good and English was the national language. She did point out, though, that English was spoken a lot in the bigger cities in Europe so the language barrier, even in a place like Poland, wasn't as great as one might think.
