The NCAA has said it will consider unbundling the package of rights, which could include breaking out the women’s basketball championship and selling it on its own. It is thought, sources said, that the rights for the women’s basketball tournament will generate more annual revenue than the entire package of championships.
Women's basketball, it seems to me, is becoming more and more a studio game, filling TV programming slots with neat two-hour slots of quality competition.
The live aspect of the game is actually hurt by playing in big arenas with lots of empty seats. It would be better, I think, to play in smaller arenas (like the Mystics) that are full, with maybe some fans unable to buy tickets. The show would be better, and since that's where the money is, it might be time to make that a priority.
