TBH - I don't have any idea what a GM actually does aside from dealing with player personnel, salary cap, scouting and coaching staff decisions. If the GM does a lot of scouting then they probably travel a lot and wouldn't be in the office all the time. GM's may do a lot of other things like buying training equipment, hiring in game entertainment, figure out game staffing, ticket sales, etc but it seems like that could well fall to some other person in the front office. There's also Tuck as assistant GM so she might be doing a lot of stuff like that. So who knows?
I’m just here for the Coach of the team and the GM being two different people, even if only on an official capacity (*cough cough* Reeve)
Damn Wade doesn’t even get a cough from you?
I point out Reeve specifically because she technically won’t be the designated GM anymore, even as we all know how much veto power she probably has. I very much do approve of the Lynx’s move to make someone else the official GM in ~general~.
And don’t worry, I absolutely do side-eye James Wade and whoever else is still both HC & GM for their team – though the more appropriate entity to side-eye might be the owner or president who made such a decision rather than the person actually serving both roles. Maybe it’s an all-or-nothing job offer, who knows.
It might’ve even been a Seattle Times article where I first realized the HC/GM single entity was a W-specific phenomenon. It mentioned how awkward it could get for Brian Agler with the players back when he was our HC and GM – and it seemed to set aside the conflict-of-interest argument of it all. I was like, yeah, this really is weird. (Turns out, he himself really was weird as well. 😳)

There are two sides to that discussion. Generally I agree that the coach and GM should be different people, but they have to be aligned in terms of personnel and style of play. If the coach wants players for a particular system but the GM likes something else, you've got problems. Or if the GM starts dictating playing time because of contract issues, that could be a problem too.
January is a very good hire for Connecticut. She played under White once upon a time, and she played with most of those in that Sun locker room, so she can be the one who bridges any gap between new coach & pre-existing players.
Laughing at other places on the internet where people are suggesting Connecticut should wait to get a "better deal" for Jonquel Jones. She's requested a trade to a specific location - what better trade deal is going to magically emerge from the mists?
TBH Connecticut should be grateful they're getting anything in return. Trades are a funny concept unique to US professional sports. Overseas, if star players want out, they usually just leave and their current team gets nothing in return. It's the way it should be IMO but trades generate interesting discussion, at least.

And this is still a good trade for Connecticut considering the circumstances – particularly if Brionna Jones re-signs. But even if she doesn’t, I guess it could still be worse.

I'm glad Brionna Jones is going to get paid, but an Alyssa Thomas/Brionna Jones frontcourt is more crowded in the paint than an Alyssa Thomas/Jonquel Jones frontcourt. At least Jonquel can hit the occasional three. I wonder if there's any more moves in the pipeline (probably?)
Her offensive numbers are ridiculously good, like top 10 in the league good. She's solid defensively too. A better supermax candidate than, say, Dewanna Bonner lol *sideeyes at Connecticut*

It’s so true. And just to clarify, I’ve never thought most of that core (Bonner, JThomas, sorrrrrta AThomas) was worth the salary they were making. Even JJones wasn’t as effective last year as her MVP year.
Under that logic, then yeah, BJones probably will be getting the supermax whichever team she’s on.
At least Connecticut finally got the backup point guard they wanted last year!
I don't know how well Allen fits into the Sun. She's a 3 who can branch out to other positions defensively but her shooting is streaky at best and I think the Sun are *still* looking for more shooting to put around their superstar paint bound 4/5 combo. Bonner and Allen could be the longest wing combo in the WNBA, at least.

Bonner hasn’t been good since the Sun traded for her. By far the worst contract outside of the one Greg Bibb gave Arike.
The Sun are definitely moving past the Miller era. Interesting they included their 2023 first round pick - I presume this is a cap clearing exercise then. I'm sure Thomas won't mind being reunited with the coach who brought the best out of her.
