2022 WNBA Free Agency

The Atlanta situation is very interesting -- especially when Chennedy Carter is added to the mix.

The new owners have hired no one in the front office, and the roster is virtually empty after this season. It looks like the perfect fire sale situation, as the new owner can come in and start fresh.

The salary cap situation facing many teams will open up opportunities for an owner invested in the team to remake the roster and create a solid contender quickly.

On the other hand, of course, if the present absentee ownership continues down this path, we could see one of the worst teams in WNBA history on the floor next season.

GM James Wade really has his work cut out for him this winter! We could see Dolson playing elsewhere next year(NY?), and based on minutes played recently, it looks like Diamond has one foot out the door already...?

For the Sky, it starts with re-signing Slooty. Full-stop. You don't have her, you probably don't have a title contender unless you get real creative. That probably means re-signing Quigley for a good amount as well, but that's okay, seeing as Quigley has not shown signs of slowing down offensively (13 PPG on 45% FG incl. 47% 3PT this season). Still, I would not be surprised if they only came back on 1-year deals, to keep their careers flexible.

Only one of Copper & DeShields will return, if either. I would lean Copper just because she's been more consistent the past year or two, though I wouldn't be surprised if DeShields switches teams & surpasses Copper's production next year with the change of scenery. (It seems like something that would happen to the Sky.) Copper might be the one to leave though if she gets an offer she can't refuse (she's making $165k this year, fwiw).

Dolson will almost assuredly leave, to the excitement/relief of many – the Sky will have prioritized very little money to re-sign her, and I highly doubt she accepts a 5-figure deal. Ndour-Fall may leave as well, but we know that she'll at least accept vet min, since she'll still be getting paid by Dallas next year given their buyout agreement, so I can imagine the Sky re-signing her the way they did this year.

And given how poorly Lexie Brown has shot in the limited minutes she's been given (not even 30% FG right now), I think the Sky go with someone else – not a big deal, given how many SGs are out there just waiting by the phone.

So basically, next season for the Sky should be:

PG: Vandersloot/Evans
SG: Quigley
SF: Copper or DeShields
PF: Stevens/Hebard
C: Parker/Ndour-Fall

That's 8 players. So long as they don't wildly overpay for any one of their pre-existing unsigned players, they should still have the money to get to 11, and maybe even enough to sign a free agent from elsewhere on the not-super-cheap.

I only had her as 12 of 13 in my list and this is only FA centers - there are centers on teams that aren't FAs so she way down on the board.  I think that interest in her is mainly reflection of how bad some of the end of bench posts are and all the injuries that have happened this year.  Since she was available fans suggested teams take a look at her when they had a spot to fill.  She put up some pretty gaudy numbers in college and played well against Collier so she showed up early in a lot of fan mock drafts.  It's pretty clear that this rookie class is so bad that most of the players still on teams are arguably no better than Mack. Best case scenario for Mack is to get a training camp contract next year.  Multiple teams have been wrong about players before (Quigley and Laney come to mind) but they have been right more often than wrong.      

And she's both pretty athletic & not undersized. That can absolutely get you a sustainable WNBA career as a post player.

Hopefully she does some developing overseas. She deserves another chance. Heck, if the Sky don't bring back Dolson or Ndour-Fall next year, they'll theoretically need a fourth post player who can pick up their system fairly quickly...
