A couple of articles about tennis and some tournaments equal pay.
I totally get where you and most people are coming from in regards to revenue.
I was brought up in a small somewhat conservative farm town in the U.S.A. so I also had a similar mindset engraved in my mind.
But I got to college, finally accepted my queer identity, and was exposed to soooooo many of the injustices and inequalities of the world. And this is when the change started for me.
Fast forward 11 years, and I’m at this point where I mean everything I said in my posts above.
The only reason I see a need for a slight discrepancy in pay for NBA and WNBA is because of the length of quarters, further 3pt line and some other rules that differ that I can’t think of (smaller ball?). But I’m all for pushing the quarters to 12 minutes and 3pt line, and a bigger basketball. If they end up getting equal pay as a result.
I wish men in tennis at the equal paying grand slam tournaments played best of 3 sets, or the ladies played best of 5, so it would indeed be equal. But the players (men) don’t publicly gripe too much about that in 2020, and accept the equal payouts and prize money. However that’s only 4 tournaments of the year, I’m not sure the discrepancy for the rest of the ATP or WTA season.
So yeah, I think to reiterate, the huge discrepancy in salary shows the sexism and misogyny of this country (and much of the world). Capitalism is rooted in slavery and cannot co exist with feminism, so to try to separate the issues of revenue/entertainment from sexism/misogyny, in my opinion, is wrong because they are intertwined.
Capitalism maintains the status quo, and enables classism.
What gives one family the right to access a refreshing pool one hot summer day, and the next family cannot because they can’t afford it?
“Life’s not fair” is such a BS answer. We can work to make it fair, if people truly wanted equality. But that’s just it right, it’s fair for rich people to have more because they ‘earned’ it. So fairness and equality do not go hand in hand, and most people will pick to continue on in life with the idea of fairness.
Omg sorry rant over 😂
