Apparently the leak caused Cathy to announce this sooner than planned. Makes me wonder if there is a 14th team planned to join in 2025?
another thing to talk about with expansion: scheduling. 2009 was the last season that we had 13 teams (which could still happen, at least for 2025). but it’s super easy to do with 34 games – 1 team plays its conference opponents 4 times each and all other teams twice each. nice, beautifully easy numbers.
not sure what they do this time around in a 40-game schedule. 1 team could easily play 8 teams three times and 4 teams four times – it would potentially get a little complicated if all teams in a given conference needed to play the same amount of conference games. in 2009, each of the 7 EC teams played 22 conference games while each of the 6 WC teams played 20 conference games. if playing as similar amounts of conference games as possible wasn’t high on the priority list, we could see one team playing as few as 18 conference games, while another team could play as many as 22.
this reporter based out of Denver claims she has a source who's making a "pretty good guess" that the league will announce two teams here, with the second team likely being Toronto [and not Denver].
She's also been the only source to claim that there will be two teams announced. Others are speculating there could be a second team announced, but some go on to say "at a later time".
The 40 game schedule is fine for 13 teams but tricky for 14 if the conferences are split 7/7.
With 13 you play everybody three times then four of your conference mates a fourth time. The seven team conference plays 22 conference games while the six team conference plays 19.
With 14 you play everybody three times but at least one team in each conference would have to play a non-conference team a fourth time. The fairest thing would be to have everybody's four game opponent be from the opposite conference, but that leads to more travel complaints. Nobody wants an extra cross-country flight.
Definitely only San Fran officially announced today then? It would be weird to announce another team from the Chase center? How long would it take to get Portland approved by the BoG?

afaic, the league just needs to be ready to announce Portland by the end of the calendar year for that team to begin play with Golden State in 2025.
speaking of “Golden State,” this is the account tagged in the above W’s post, as well as their first tweet:

I just don't see two teams coming in. Existing teams would not only lose more players, they would also lose more of the TV and sponsorship revenue (two teams would cut that income by 14.3%; one team by 7.6%.
Whatever scheduling issues might exist can be dealt with. Teams want to keep their players, and keep their money.

But the owners also know they are about to get a substantially larger TV deal. Adding more teams is good for growth and I think being in more markets will give the league more leverage in negotiating the new TV deal.
