goodness. well, the article said she’s still staying within Minnesota’s Athletic Department as (a) Special Assistant to the AD, which i assume is a full-time job?
1) Being a good player and a smart player does not necessarily equal being a good coach. That's why I always question the concept of Star A "mentoring" young player B. Teaching is different than playing.
Of course, college basketball is about recruiting talent as well, but clearly Lindsay Whalen just wasn't very good at this job.
2) Hiring a fan favorite (see Stephanie White) is risky. Sometimes it works (see Kara Lawson), but often it's just the path of least resistance on the part of the AD. You get a bunch of media buzz, the alums are happy and no one can really disagree.
