This is not just a blow to Sky fans, but to the league. It really looks like Chicago will be non-competitive. At this level, you have to have talent to compete, and aside from Copper and Stevens, I don't see a WNBA-level starter on that roster, and only a couple rotation players.
The Sky likely have a hard reset and a very hard 2023 in front of them, but let me just say that I don’t think they’re in danger of folding as a result. If a team like Indiana can [continue to] stay alive after all these awful years…
Rebuilding years happen to virtually every team at one point or another. It’s hard for fans, especially the longer the rebuild lasts, but they [ought to] understand that this is the nature of the business sometimes.
It’s Wade’s job to build and coach the team. He can’t be held responsible for a lack of investment from ownership that has led to the Sky missing out on the WNBA’s top free agents.
Now I know Chicago has a new co-owner, but their influence over finances related to this free agency period is probably minimal.
With Stevens officially gone, I don’t get why Copper would want to stick around. To me, the Sky need to shop her anyway to start getting pieces. I feel the exact same about Jewell Loyd here.
Although, as it’s been pointed out, rebuilds can be very hard on the longterm well-being of attendance numbers in this league. I’m not super concerned here about the Storm’s, especially since we’ve openly gone through a rebuild before, but I wouldn’t intimately know about the Sky’s overall situation.
It's mind-blowing that neither Chicago or Seattle has signed anyone. Even if Sloot is happening for Seattle.
They're either in no rush to (rebuild) or there are other pressing matters that they have to deal with first before they can create a new plan of action, such as sign-and-trading Stewart, trading Loyd, trading Copper, and/or other matters.
Hmmmmmm thoughts on Loyd to Chicago to team up with Copper?
Not sure what the trade would look like, or if it’s worth it to the sky unless she is RFA next season?
Chicago has nothing to offer but their draft picks which they will want to retain. If Chicago wants her, it's better they wait till her free agency (she'll be unrestricted) because it will also allow them to tank better this year.
Courtney Williams is perfect for a tank year for the Sky. Just think of her 2020 and 2021 with Atlanta - high numbers for her, not much winning basketball for her team.
I'd play Maley a small ball 4 on this roster. You could get some good uptempo lineups out of this roster. They wouldn't win very much, but it would be fun.
Just going onto Copper’s Twitter now where she’s been pretty active regarding retweeting or shouting out all the various arrivals and departures the Sky have experienced the past few weeks, so maybe she’s content to stay put, and thus, maybe the Sky is content to have her stay put
Chicago has the potential to be one of those teams that’s still bad but can be entertaining to watch. They may still end up in the Lottery, but it’d be beneficial to the Storm from a W-L perspective if there were no other teams openly tanking or starting from scratch. I suppose that means I’m hoping Copper stays put this year.
Idk if Chicago though can be a trade destination for Loyd even if they did have the right assets to make it happen if Copper stays with CWill added to the mix.
