She overpaid for Powers, McBride and definitely Achonwa. She cut her two PGs just days before the season began and was fortunate enough to get Mo Jefferson through a contract divorce. I never thought of her as a good GM. She got Augustus and Moore via the draft, landed Brunson via a dispersal draft, plus Whalen and Fowles demanded to be traded there.
I just don’t see what the point is of publicly throwing your team under the bus, when as both the HC and GM, you are the one driving the goddamn bus(!!). Everything that happens happens on your watch. If you really insist on dragging them out in the open, then good luck coaching them again or replacing them with others next year, cuz why would current or prospective players want to join your team? (Obviously it works for Geno & UConn, but it’s certainly a different dynamic in the pros, especially when you start finishing towards the bottom of the standings.)

I mean she also literally said that "I tried to get on 'em. I tried yelling at them. I tried to leave 'em alone. I was not able to get through to this group." so she was trying different things. Nothing seemed to work. So indirectly she did also blame herself. But also clearly the personnel wasn't right for what she wanted them to buy into.
Reeve's GM-ing this year certainly did not like Reeve the Coach. She banked on some real risky moves and they basically all didn't work.
But also we expect a lot in Minnesota and this year was basically a total failure all around. I'm glad to hear honesty and that we aren't accepting this like some franchises would or do.

Again, why say it out loud? Or, why say it without taking even a smidge of responsibility?

But the biggest problem, the thing that had Reeve questioning herself as a coach, was that she was never able to get the team to commit to working hard enough to consistently win.
I mean yes it's not a direct quote, but to me this reads like she took some responsibility if she was questioning herself as a coach for this group. But maybe I'm the only one that read it that way.

Ehh. To me it's hard to say, since it could be more of an inference/conclusion drawn by who she was giving soundbites to. Of course, maybe she herself really did say more about what she could've done better, but it was cut out of the article... for the sake of the narrative.
The other undercurrent to this article was her not necessarily committing to being back.
Reeve['s]... contract is up. She said she has been in contact with outgoing owner Glen Taylor, but hasn't spoken to incoming owners Marc Lore or Alex Rodriguez about her future with the team. She said she expects Taylor to work as a liaison on the issue.
"Ownership has been good to me," she said. "Ownership believes in me, ownership is in this with me. I think that's really important. I've made a life here. But it doesn't mean it will last a lifetime. If ownership thinks I'm the right person to lead us, I'll have to determine whether I'm up for the challenge."
And by that same token, things would be "guaranteed" to change if Reeve leaves the Lynx, I suppose. If she's gonna leave the Lynx without retiring, the timing would make sense.
I read it as Reeve taking some responsibility for not doing her job as a coach -- and the first job of any coach at any level in any sport is to get your players to play hard.
That said, as GM she did pick these players.
On another note, the two players who had the worst on/off court ratings -- Powers and Shepard -- got the most minutes. Odd ...

I think there must be something about that stat that produces counter intuitive results. Of the ten players with the most minutes the worst (negatives) were Powers, Shepard, Fowles and MoJeff. Even Fowles had a negative number albeit small. Conversely, the best players were Dantas, Carlton, Banham and McBride (in that order). Those players seem more like starters on an expansion team (except for McBride) than starters for the Lynx. Then again, maybe coach Reeve just played the wrong players so she gets more of the blame......
I’m guessing this was the perfect time for Reeve to negotiate an extension/promotion, once the Lynx were probably faced with the real possibility that there was a job out there that Reeve would be willing to walk away from the Lynx for.
And she probably still calls most of the shots as President of Basketball Operations (I guess no conflict of interest there despite her remaining as HC), even as she’s giving away her GM title in an official capacity.
Of course, instead of getting to command a ready-to-contend roster in Connecticut, she is now unequivocally tasked with how to rebuild/retool the Lynx into an actual contender. If she likes Alyssa Thomas so much, AT ought to be the first player Reeve tries to trade for in the winter – and if the pursuit ends in success, ya figure the rest out from there.
But yeah, needless to say, it makes things a little bit complicated for the Lynx’s salary cap. Perhaps pregnancy/maternity leave not counting against teams' caps is something that can be negotiated in the next CBA, but imo it makes the league look cheap & broke for not doing so. Not a fan of it. (Which, I mean, surely it is, but it doesn’t have to act like it in this case. 🙃)
